Cannabis, also known as Marijuana, weed, pot, ganja, etc. is a plant that has psychoactive effects if the flower of the Cannabis plant is smoked or consumed in other forms such as edibles. The psychoactive chemical in Marijuana is called THC.

So far, medical marijuana is legalized in 31 states and 11 of those states have legalized recreational use. The commencement of marijuana legalization has shifted society's views of the psychoactive drug in a positive way, while, displaying all the physical, psychological, and physiological benefits this plant has to offer.

There was a time when mental health did not receive as much emphasis as it does today. Access to cannabis, whether it is medical or recreational, has been beneficial for mental health. Cannabis has aid in treating people with anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, and many more.

THERE ARE MANY CLAIMED BENEFITS OF CANNABINOIDS/CANNABIS AROUND THE WORLD, MAINLY WHEN IT COMES TO BEING USEFUL WITH INTERNAL ISSUES SUCH AS DISEASES, PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS OF ILLNESSES, AND MENTAL HEALTH. 


FOR EXAMPLE, CANNABINOIDS MAY BE HELPFUL IN TREATING EPILEPSY, NAUSEA AND VOMITING ASSOCIATED WITH CANCER CHEMOTHERAPY, AND LOSS OF APPETITE AND WEIGHT LOSS ASSOCIATED WITH HIV/AIDS (NIH, 2019).

IN ADDITION, A STUDY DONE IN 2017 BY ANNALS OF INTERNAL MEDICINE FOUND THAT…”ABOUT 81% OF U.S. ADULTS BELIEVE MARIJUANA HAS AT LEAST 1 BENEFIT, WHEREAS 17% BELIEVE IT HAS NO BENEFIT. THE MOST COMMON BENEFIT CITED WAS PAIN MANAGEMENT (66%), FOLLOWED BY TREATMENT OF DISEASES, SUCH AS EPILEPSY AND MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (48%), AND RELIEF FROM ANXIETY, STRESS, AND DEPRESSION (47%)" (KEYHANI, ET AL, 2018).

USING MARIJUANA TO COPE WITH ANXIETY

In a study of a sample from nine medical marijuana evaluation clinics in California, 37.8% of patients reported that they used marijuana to relieve anxiety, 16.9% to relieve panic attacks, and 55.1% to improve relaxation. Anxiety/depression was identified by a physician as a reason for authorizing medicinal marijuana (MM) use on 13.0% of these patients’ MM patient ID cards. A recent study surveyed MM users recruited through social media and dispensaries from December 2013 to January 2016. More than half (58.1%) reported they used MM for anxiety and participants indicated that they felt MM improved their symptoms.

ANXIETY AND MARIJUANA

A study done by the Journal of Cannabis Research, their finding suggested that “...self-directed use of Cannabis flower, especially that with higher THC levels, is associated with significant improvements in at least short-term feelings of distress in many users, likely a contributing factor to its widespread popularity and consumption in the U.S.” (Stith, S.S. et al, 2020)
